Al was an artist his entire life. From oils, acrylics and watercolors, to mixed media (multimedia before computers!) his fine artwork was vivid and full of life. As a graphic artist, Al had a career that spanned over fifty years, from working for various advertising agencies, newspapers, magazines, and even time as a Disney animator. One of his most well-known designs was done while employed by an ad agency: The Hamms Beer Bear! While I was always in awe of his artistic technique and skill, it was his approach to design that inspired me the most. If the project called for it, he would put down his paint brushes and pens, pick up a camera, and produce imagery that showcased his clients' product or services. Conversely, he would combine the images he took with his camera with his master paint brush strokes to create a whole new vision. To me, he was one of the original "multimedia" artists! I have aspired over my career to emulate my grandfather's approach to design: all creative advantages are to be explored. It is for this reason, that I took the next logical step in his direction, only with the edge that latest technology and techniques could provide. I have spent the last 15 years learning all aspects of design for a culture that is heavily auditory and visual. It has been my mission to excel in all aspects of design, leaving nothing out of my toolbelt. With this in mind, I have mastered traditional design for print, emerging design for electronic delivery such as web, television, CDROM, DVD, and the powerful component that ties message and imagery all together: audio. I love what I do, it's in my blood. Any given day will find me designing a brochure in the morning, a website mid-day, a video in the afternoon, and recording music in the studio in the evening. Every day, I get better and better at all of these disciplines, and that makes it even more fun than ever! |
